When i was a kid i absolutely loved getting my first pocket knife. It was given to me by my granddad and i’ve still got it, somewhere, amidst all the other pocket knives i’ve collected since. To this day I carry a pocket knife or multi-tool just about everywhere i go (insert TSA gripes here) because they’re simply so damn useful. So when i saw Gever Tulley’s TED Talk on dangerous things for kids in which he suggests all children should be given a pocket knife i was interested.
Tulley also suggested in his talk that children be allowed to take things apart and learn how they work which was another of my favourite hobbies as a kid. My father would always bring home broken computer equipment and i would disassemble it and, rarely, put it back together again. Part of me thinks this is what lead to my love of computers and tinkering.
Looks like Tulley’s book Fifty Dangerous Things has finally been released and if it’s anything like his TED talk it should be excellent. Will definitely be picking up a copy myself.
It took me forever to figure out who all these Coho people were; at first i thought it was just some annoying bot and mostly ignored it. It wasn’t until i finally responded to one calling it a bot (to which i was accused of being a bot back) that i got curious enough to investigate. According to Wikipedia the bots are directed at public twitterers, the goal of the social experiment being to connect random people. They usually lead with some simple comment sent to both users ranging from the simple “Hi!” through other greetings and apparently, as i found out tonight, including demands of “internet sex”.

To the random internet stranger who, through coho, i apparently demanded the “internet sex” from, hats off to you my friend.
Jasen discovered recently that this coming Friday, Feburary 13th, at 18:31:30 EST it will be exactly 1234567890 in Unix time. As an added bonus it’ll be Friday the 13th! So of course we’ve decided to celebrate. Now how exactly do i go about creating a zombie Ken Thompson costume?
I’ve been slowly fixing up a house and things have been going pretty well if i do say so myself. I’d been dreading renovating the kitchen however and as such it sat in 50’s form for quite a while before i touched anything.

Well i’d finally had enough of it and decided (with a little encouragement) that it was time to start on the daunting task of fixing things up. New cabinets, floor, appliances, the works. And though there’s still one damaged cabinet to be replaced it’s just about finished and i have to say i’m fairly happy with the results. It’s taken up the majority of my free time over the last month (save for a trip to Reno in there) but it’s been worth it.
